Resident soap alchemist and head designer, Jana spent her 10 years in Scotland wisely, meeting me & acquiring 2 Master's degrees from both Edinburgh College of Art and Glasgow University, and I have to be totally honest, I don't think I ever saw her study once which is impressive, but also infuriating. Jana took a few floriculture and design classes with me at school (taught by the incredible Linda Beutler) and was hooked, furthering her design education at Portland's Floral Design Institute.
Hort dork Craig started his first farm a year after immigrating to the US and 6 months into his Horticultural Science degree. The farm was a half acre market garden in the Bonny Slope neighborhood of Portland - Bonny Slope Market Garden. The neighborhood was eventually seized by developers and turned into a subdivision named after the deer herd that they drove out. The farm dream was relocated to Kelso, WA and the focus turned quickly to flowers.
Our small family farm is nestled in an old coppiced woodland near the little town of Kelso, Washington. From the very beginning we wanted our farm to be a safe place for our kids to play and explore nature.
While cultivating crops is a far cry from nature, we strive to embrace nature as best we can and encourage the natural abundance all around our farm and woodland. We're very lucky to be surrounded by the woods and abundant wildlife, away from other farms where pests can be observed, but mostly left to be dealt with by the predators who come and go. And each year more and more incredible insects, birds and creatures can be seen and heard all around our property.
Building a rich, healthy light and airy soil has become the foundation for our work and we phased out tillage in favor of the practice of occultation to benefit the heath and structure of our heavy clay soil. The process involves laying tarps over the growing areas over winter to eliminate light, which kills off weeds and plant material allowing insects and soil organisms to break everything down to a light, workable soil rich in organic matter.
