Bell's Pollinator Selection
A curated selection of unusual dahlias from my breeding patch, chosen for their interesting flower forms and their value to pollinators and other beneficial insects.
These aren't simply open-centered dahlias. Each one has something a little different going on, from collarette and anemone centers to petaloids, twisted or curled ray florets, unusual color combinations and other characteristics that caught my eye during the selection process.
These dahlias grow in my personal collection and in my beehive patch, where I mix them throughout the more heavily doubled varieties. Their more accessible flowers give bees, hoverflies and other beneficial insects additional places to forage while still giving me the unusual and beautiful flowers I want in a dahlia garden.
Insect populations are facing increasing pressure from habitat loss, reduced floral diversity, pesticides, disease and a changing climate. One of the simplest things we can do as gardeners is make a little more room for them. More flowers, more diversity and more places to feed throughout the season.
That's become an increasingly important part of what I want to do with my breeding program. My mission isn't just to sell more dahlias. I want the dahlias I put out into the world to do some good while they're there. If I can get more pollinator-friendly flowers mixed into dahlia patches across the country, that's a small contribution toward helping our little friends bounce back.
While these seedlings may not become individually named introductions, they've earned their place in my own garden and I think they're worthy of being shared in yours.
Each pack is curated to give you a varied mix of colors and flower forms. They are unnamed, individual seedlings from my breeding program, so every selection will be different.
