Jowey Winnie

Flower type: Ball
Height: 3½–4’
Staking/support required: Yes

Grower’s Notes:
One of the first dahlias I ever grew and still a staple in the field. Jowey Winnie produces tight, fully double ball-shaped blooms about four inches across, with layers of petals that curve inward in that classic, perfect ball form. The color is hard to describe exactly, somewhere between soft pink, dusty rose, and peach with mauve undertones that shift in the light.

It’s a fast grower and an early riser in spring. Quick to eye up in storage and among the first to get going in the field. The plant is vigorous and needs staking early on, as rapid growth can lead to flopping just as the blooms start to come in heavy.

It’s also been a useful variety for breeding, performing well as both a seed and pollen parent. Tuber production is reliable, though I’ve learned to check halfway through storage for signs of softening or rot.

As a cut flower it holds beautifully, with strong stems and blooms that last well in the vase. Jowey Winnie has earned its place year after year, not just for its beauty, but for how well it performs in every part of the growing cycle.
